    Default Banged up knee :(

Three days ago (Friday), I slipped on ice in my driveway and fell forward and landed square on my left kneecap. Holy moly did that hurt. I didn't hear/feel any cracks or pops though and I could move it, so I figured it wasn't broken and put ice on it on and off all day.

The swelling has gone down considerably and I did see a doctor on Saturday who thinks it's just a contusion, but gave me a prescription for an x-ray just to be sure (when he tried to straighten my leg all the way I yelped, and I think that's why he added the x-ray). I'm going for the x-ray this morning, but I'm totally freaked out that I did something awful to a ligament. Walking is pretty much ok at this point but getting into a stance? Uh-uh. Where I feel the pain is on the inside "edge" of my knee (for lack of a better description). I really hope that's just because of swelling and not something a lot worse. I already missed one game and have one on Wednesday... THIS STINKS!!! It's also driving me nuts not being able to do my workouts. Grrrrr.

The problem with the human body and knees in particular is that they're so hyper complex that even though you didn't see or hear anything happen, any one of the million parts could've been seriously affected.

Hopefully Maria will come in and give you some better advice.

I highly doubt you sustained any real damage to the knee from an impact wound. It's probably what the doctor said, a contusion. Do not play if you're in pain because it can lead to irregular movement and possible further damage. Like if you're knee gives out to compensate and you end up hurting a ligament for real.

Also from my minor knowledge of how the medical equipment works, they won't be able to tell any ligament damage from just an x-ray. You would need a MRI.

Yeah, well I guess the x-ray wasn't pointless.... fractured kneecap. Really not happy right now.

For all I know, I could have that too. This was just an x-ray the urgent care doc sent me for. Tomorrow I'm going to see an orthopedist, and I'm hoping they'll send me for an MRI to check the ligaments out too.

Yikes, that sounds expensive since you're in the USA. I hope you have good medical insurance.

So, the fracture is healed, and they said I could take the immobilizer off - indoors only. I went to physical therapy and got started with that. I'm guessing 4-6 weeks until I'm on the ice, based on what the ortho said, but the PT said in 2 weeks we'll have a better idea for a timetable. So there goes the entire rest of the season for both of my leagues. I guess it's a good thing that I'll be back for the half dozen tournaments I'm in this spring/summer... but based on the way my knee feels now it seems so far away. One team has a game tonight. It's so hard to go and watch but it's hard to stay away too.

Thanks. It certainly could be a lot worse. I'm going to work my ass off and be the best patient this doc has ever had.
