    Default Groin injury?

Son (11 yrs old) started complaining that his leg hurt. (He skated out with a Learn to Play Hockey class for adults last night. - A lot more skating than he usually does.)
Today I found a knot in the muscle on the inside of his upper thigh... He tried to play goal with it, but had trouble getting up from the ice and he said it didn't feel right in his butterfly. Groin pull??? Or just a high quad pull?

Right now just rest and anti-imflammatory.

Any remedies? What are some good stretches to prevent groin pulls?

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like a groin pull. I'd do sideways leans(don't really know the name). basically, I have a knee to the ground and my other leg at 90 degrees to that leg with it on my foot and lean forward to stretch the groin at on the leg that is flat. I'll post a pic so you know what I mean. Lean towards the leg that has the foot on the ground then switch. Works for me pretty well.

    Um Doctor!
With kids you never really have an accurate idea of how bad it is. Could be minor and they are just whinning, or a major issue and there sucking it up.

thnx... He tends to overplay any pains... Probably minor, but the info on stretches is great! Mom & Dad don't know anything at this age, but other real goalies...maybe a different story.

Really want him to be stretching well to prevent serious injuries.

Yeah, my kids over play too, but you never know in sports, especially with guys and groin injuries but I'd suspect if it was serious you would see him limping and stuff as that muscle gets used a lot when walking and steps and all that. Anyways hope he gets better and can get back out there.

P.S. I'm no doctor , just a goalie who happens to be a dad

The mother said she found a knot, not the child.

I'm not sure how quickly things have changed with health care in the states, but it's not like up here. Most American's want to be sure about something before that costly visit to the doctor. :)

Anything on the inner side would not be the quadricep.

I really recommend warming up and then stretching.

Basically, if you have health insurance, you go to the doctor and then you have what is called a co-pay. Co-pay is what you would pay at each doctor's visit and the insurance would cover the remainder. Depending on one's insurance plan, the co-pay can be $10, $25, $50, and sometimes $0. So if you want plastic surgery for a nose job, you have to pay for everything. If you need necessary surgery like a hernia operation, you pay for the co-pay for each visit and then depending on your medical insurance, a percentage of the surgical cost (or if you have high-level of coverage insurance, this could be $0 out-of-pocket).

If you don't have insurance, you can go to the hospital to the emergency room and they will see you. Expenses are covered by the hospital in a budget they have for people without insurance. If you are in a dire medical situation, your operation will be performed regardless of whether you have insurance or not. Pregnancy, car accident, shooting victim, etc.

First, I'm not a doctor, and nor is anyone here. However, a "knot" can be indicative of a torn muscle that has retracted into an atypical position, which requires surgery. This doesn't always come with blasting pain. Further, if this problem persists, even if it's not a turn muscle, per say, groin pulls can lead to the build up of scar tissue which can hinder the range of motion of the joint.

I would recommend you first call what's called a Nurses Answer Line. As I work in healthcare (though not clinically) I became acutely aware of this awesome, free service set up by many top hospitals. The one locally (in case you can't find one locally) is St. Louis Children's Hospital and their number is 314.454.KIDS. Basically you call, they take down some basic info, and you describe the symptoms. Often they'll be able to tell you whether they think it's something that needs more treatment or a visit to his primary or whether it's something that'll get better with a lot of RICE (rest, ice, compression, elevation). Either way, I recommend talking to a healthcare professional (and CALL, it's FREE!) and making sure that the lump might not be indicative of something with an adverse outcome for him, such as a torn and retracted muscle or an injury that might lead to a build up of scar tissue.

    Good luck!
