Default Knee pain with new pads

I just got on the ice for the first time with my new pads. They are V4 7600's that are slightly used, but my one problem was that my knees hurt when dropping into the butterfly. It feels like the landing gear is a lot harder than my old Bauer Vapors I was using and I think that may be part of the problem.

I'm getting used to the buckle knee straps and I think I may have to mess around with those since the pain in my right knee was worse than my left. Could this be a strapping issue and would a good set of knee/thigh protectors help?

I don't have experience with those Vaughn pads, but I have used pads with the stiffer knee lock (Passau). I found I didn't get knee pain persay from the stiffer landing though, but you could definitely tell it was stiffer.

What type of pain are we talking about here? Bruise? Muscle? Internal?

As a goalie, you are going to experience knee pain in your career at some point. It's inevitable haha I have knee pain after every game. I also wear neoprene knee braces to help soften the blow when going into butterfly. Tried using volleyball knee guards but it just felt awkward

I'd suggest going to your local sports shop and getting some thin knee guards. Like the ones that are just a couple thick pads in the elastic cover. Lots of goalies I know wear these underneath to protect from the knees hurting on the knee lock.

More just surface pain really. A little swelling and soreness but nothing serious. I just found it odd because I never had any problems with my old pads when I would drop down. Next time I'm on the ice I'll have to see if it's an issue with pad rotation or something like that. I'll probably grab some knee pads also to make it a bit softer.

I wear a pair of old Bauer Reactor knee pads (older version of these - Bauer Sr. Goalie Knee Protectors) underneath my pads. I had the same issue as you when I first started playing, and these knee pads helped a ton. They're probably only a little more than a quarter-inch thick, but for me at least, that's all it took to help the pain go away.

I would smack them for a while, it softens them up. Usually.*
I had that problem with my Itechs when I first got them, but I decided smacking them might help, and it did.

I was having the same problem with my Bauer Vapor X50 pads. So I got some soft volleyball knee pads. They really helped alot. The padding is about 3/8" thick. To me it's not that noticable, but feels so much better.
