Default Bum knee giving me fits...take glucosamine?

Back in October I tore my sartorius in my right leg. I took about 2 months off from hockey and recently got back on the ice a couple weeks ago. I'm also in the process of training for the PT test I have to pass to get hired on with a police department. My knee is still not happy...especially running. Dropping in the butterfly is getting easier but b-fly slides aren't happening when I push off with my right leg. My knee just can't handle it. I've probably been pushing it playing hockey and training for the PT test but with one of the departments I'm applying for testing on the 22nd I sort of haven't had a choice but to get back in the gym and since i'm back in the gym...why not back on the ice too?

Anyway, I'm wondering if anyone has ever or does take glucosamine for joint health? A few of my friends that are big runners told me to try it to help my knee. I know it's too late in the game to start taking it and have any results by the 22nd but I figure that if it does work I'll be in good shape before going to the police academy or testing for another department should I not get hired on at the one I'm testing for on the 22nd. Not to mention I'll be in good shape for summer league which will make my team VERY happy to have me back!

I've been taking it for weeks and haven't seen any good results. I think it's a bunch of bull.

It's supposed to help lubricate your joints. I've heard better results come from the shark cartillage supplement. You can also eat plenty of sulphur rich foods, such as onions and garlic. They help lubricate joints and build cartillage and tendons.

Shoot, if I eat lots of onions and garlic I won't have to worry about my knee being in shape for hockey. I can just stand in my crease and breathe on everyone.

True, but think of the convictions you'll amass as a cop! People will plead guilty just to get away from your breath! :)

HAHA! Either that or I'll have a lot of foot pursuits on my hands since they'll probably try to get away from me. Plus I'll probably get the nickname of Officer Stinky or something like that.

glucosamine is not a miracle cure for joint injury, it may be a helpful supplement, but I'd suggest seeing your doctor to have it checked out. It could be a partially torn meniscus, a strained or torn ligament, scar tissues buildup, or even related to your sartorius issue since the muscle runs down the medial side of the knee and inserts on the tibia. Its best not to ignore knee problems, there is very little chance of improvement through rest

I've seen my doc several times about it. I even ran into him at the rink the other day. (His son plays peewee.) He's convinced it's "just" my sartorius with the main damage being in the knee area due to how it happened and where the majority of the pain is. I asked him about excercises to help it and he just said to carry on as normal. Heat it before hockey, try biking, tension bands, etc. He told me 2-3 months for it to heal and seeing as I'm about 3 months out that's about right. It is feeling better every week but it just seems slow and with me having to test for police departments soon I'm looking for anything that might give it an extra "boost" to function properly...or hurt less. Whatever comes first.

    Ugh. Knee injuries suck!

I know how you feel... I had knee surgery last month and will be out for the second half of our college season... on the bright side, as you said its just the sartorius! There isn't much you can do to speed up the healing process (or the process of it feeling "normal" again), but I wish you luck, Just be patient and get that sucker nice and warmed up before playing!
