Very informative but do you have any way to properly measure? I actually think this is happening on my sticks.

Choosing the proper stick size, modern requirements
21.7.2004
This photoset demonstrates how important is is for the modern goalies also consider their position in the butterfly when choosing their stick and not just go by what feels good at the stance - after all, most saves today are made down from the ice.![]()

Tall stick pushes the stance up a bit, but this one is still OK Goalies normal stance

Now you really see the difference when goalie goes down to butterfly and too tall paddle pushes the blocker arm up leaving a nasty hole between the body and the blocker arm. Proper size stick works well also when goalie plays down on the ice in butterfly position. See how the goalie can still keep the blade on the ice and keep blocker arm at right position next to his body.

A goalie must have one overriding quality-- he must want to be a goalie. - Emile Francis
Nobody understands the position who hasn't played it. Hockey is a team game, but for a goalie, it's more like an individual sport. - John Garrett
I would think the only way to measure is to get someone taking pictures of you in these positions. Seeing the difference and trying a different stick size if there is a major gap.
"Soccer players pretend they're hurt, Hockey players pretend they're not."
Great article, and I absolutely agree. I wish companies would all use the same measuring. Unfortunately I've run into a few instances where I've bought sticks that don't match my Sher-wood SOPs, which I was certain were 27" paddles, but measure, for some manufacturers, around 26" or so. You don't really realize it until you get in your stance and feel your blocker is completely off, haha.
awesome , but this doesnt help me. I need to replace my stick shortly but have no idea what size i should use. also what sort of stick i.e composite , all wood etc etc . Is there a way for myself to see what size would be best suited to me ??
Only correct way is to asses the proper size on the ice by having someone experienced enough to analyze how you play and what fits your style the best. I do this with pro's all the time and takes some time always to get them adjusted to changes. There are many factors and that butterfly example is just one of them.
