    Default Custom Goalie Stick

Well, I haven't made many posts on this forum but I enjoy reading others' topics. So here's my question. What size paddle should I get, and where should I get from? Here's my situation... I am 6' 2'' without skates, and I play high school hockey. I went through 3 of Reebok's 28'' (Paddle) wooden foam core sticks this year. I think the 28'' paddle has been hindering my glove and blocker positioning. Since a recent goalie camp, I've been trying to make myself look somewhat bigger in terms of glove/blocker positioning(if that makes any sense), and it seems to helping my game. Before this, I played more of a compact double coverage sort of style with my glove/blocker. I know Don Simmons offers custom sticks up to 28.5'', and Christian sticks go up to 29''. Oh, and I might be able to get a video of my stance and movement soon, since the instructors video taped some movement drills etc at this goalie camp. So, what do you guys/gals think?

I got this from another thread. Hope it helps. I started with a 27" paddle then changed to 25" and I'm 6'.

This photoset demonstrates how important is is for the modern goalies also consider their position in the butterfly when choosing their stick and not just go by what feels good at the stance - after all, most saves today are made down from the ice.

Tall stick pushes the stance up a bit, but this one is still OK Goalies normal stance

Now you really see the difference when goalie goes down to butterfly and too tall paddle pushes the blocker arm up leaving a nasty hole between the body and the blocker arm. Proper size stick works well also when goalie plays down on the ice in butterfly position. See how the goalie can still keep the blade on the ice and keep blocker arm at right position next to his body.

Also you have to remember, every stick manufacturer uses different stick measuring methods. Warrior sticks tend to be a lot shorter than the average.

Talk to Jarid, the blonde kid in the goalie room. Ask him anything, he should help you out.

I know who your talking about, talked to him lots. I guess my gripe is i have spent lots of money buying gear, and then replacing it because it didnt work well for me. I guess its part of the process, but not everyone can afford to do that.

LOL, you're telling me? I think that's just part of being a goalie. Before I started this site, I went through, and bought 3 full sets of gear in like a 1 year period.

For me its similar to Itech, although I dont have a hockey shop near me. All my info came from testing and forums. I am on my 3rd set of pads, 2nd Chesty, 3rd set of Trap n Block and 2nd stick, and I only started play last Christmas.

Sticks are wierd and awkward to find what works best for you. I started with a 26" RBK 6K Pro Return, my first stick. Didnt like it too much, switched to a 27" SWD 9950 Ex Thin and love it, it has a slightly bigger blade, and is about 1.5" taller in the paddle

You know whats interesting about this picture is that in pic #1 he has his stick almost touching his pads. In pic #2 he has it in front. This would also be contributing to his large hole between his side and his blocker. He also changed his trapper position. Its clear to me that its these adjustments that closed those holes mare than the stick length.
