I've been very reluctant to try it. Because it's going to wear out a lot of steel if I decide to go back. I'm a 1/2" sharpening guy, and I usually get 3 games out of my sharpens. But I'm still a little tempted to try it.

Hey everybody, first time poster, quasi-longtime lurker here. Curious if anybody else uses the Blackstone Flat Bottom V style sharpening on their skates? In Canada, all the Sportchek stores have the machine. It was recommended to me by a goalie at a nearby shop I go to, but every other time I've requested it, people are always like "...are you sure?" I find it holds my edge a lot longer than traditional 5/8" hollow sharpening. I'm a bigger goalie, so I used to wear my edges like crazy... often needing a sharpening after one or two games. Now after a good sharpening, I can probably go 6-8 games without any major concerns. Anybody else have any thoughts?

If I had a string of a few scrimmages I wouldn't mind trying it, but in a season I'm not willing to take the chance. My experience with FBV on my player skate has been terrible. It feels "slidey" and it never gets better. While I do get much stronger strides and you absolutely do coast down the ice faster, stopping is a huge problem on FBV. I can't stop as quickly as I can using my regular 5/8"; instead, I slide a good 1-3 FEET further. Just haven't been able to get used to it.
My son is a forward 10 yrs old and i one day took his skates and didnt tell him and had them done flat bottom V, afterwards he was like wow, what a good skate sharpen you got.
I said what did you think i had something different done, he said he felt like he could turn better and skate faster...
i was told by the pro shop. that the flat bottom sharpening is not for goalie skates.
Cheers
Jim
I just sharpen mine to 3/4". I can go a whole quarter season on one sharpening. just enough bite but also just enough slide

3/4" isn't very sharp, you might just like dull blades if you can go that long. I have a feeling you're not very heavy either.

I just switched from 5/8" to 1/2". Big difference. I find i can get a much better push in my butterfly slides.
i use step steel and they really hold a sharpening.. i use 7/16 regular sharpening, not v bottom and I like them
You guys raised something I never really made the connection on, but my butterfly slides *have* suffered a bit after switching to flat bottom sharpening. I only use 100/50, which is the middle of the road groove, which may explain the lessened bite I get when attempting to push. Weird how it never occurred to me... but I guess it gives me something to think about now next time I sharpen. Which should be pretty soon... Thanks for all the different insight!
