Typically what I do is I'll still send it USPS but I'll ship it through one of those small chain mall shippers like a "Goin' Postal" or other witty name they come up with. Those guys really want your business and will tell you the tricks of the trade.

Not long ago I had to ship breast milk (not even kidding.. that's a whole other story) overnight across the state. I was just going to ship it in a taped-up foam cooler with dry ice. My shipper said, "Mind if I make you a box for it? It will protect it a little better." So of course I said "sure." When it was delivered, the outside box had tears in it, the foam box inside was broken in three places, and some of the milk bags had been punctured and started leaking. Most of it made it there, though, so I wasn't overly concerned. I went in a couple days later and he said, "Hey, everything work out with that package?" And I told him how it arrived. He was so angry he actually took the time to appeal to his UPS rep to get our $140 back, and within three days we had a check. Had I used USPS, I'm sure I'd be filling out some five page form and not hear back for months.

Anyway, just a suggestion if you have any of those places around.

LOL Across state.. St. Louis to KC. My wife donates extra breast milk (we have an 8 month old) to a woman who can't produce it for her child. After having that mishap (and finding out the true cost), we just drive an hour and a half and meet them (woman and her family) half way now. But, anyway, that's the story, haha.
