Reebok 580 (90 degree) vs. 590 (60 degree) Break

It's INCREDIBLY hard by looking at them.. from first appearances they look like the exact same glove. Here's a couple tell-tale ways:

580 (90 degree): The top of the webbing will come back towards the thumb and will be rounded; the thumb will come to the fingers.
590 (60 degree): The top of the webbing will point straight and will come to a point; the fingers will come to the thumb.

    Pics:
Top: Reebok Revoke 580 break (90 degree Break)
Bottom: Reebok Premier Series III 590 break (60 Degree Break)

Notice the T-pocket on the Revoke is slightly more towards the finger side of the palm while it attached at the top of the webbing slightly more to the left than the PIII glove, which starts more towards the thumb side and extends across more towards the finger side.

    Here's the Revoke 580 closure:

Notice that the top of the webbing is more rounded and comes back towards the thumb. you'll also note that the thumb goes INSIDE the finger area.

Now let's compare to the Premier III 590 angle:

You'll note the top of the webbing comes to a nice point, extends straight out (as opposed to towards the thumb), and, most importantly, the fingers are on the INSIDE of the thumb area now.

If you're still having problems seeing the last point (thumb inside or outside of fingers or thumb going towards fingers/fingers going towards thumbs), just compare where the top of the thumb is in relation to where the webbing connects with the finger side of the glove; the 580 connects very close to the top of the thumb, while the 590 connects far below the thumb. Also you can compare the lengths of the right and left sides of the closed T-pocket: you'll note the 590 break has a much more elongated right side, while the 580 break has a much less elongated right side.

Hope that isn't too complicated to read. Unless you're really looking at it you won't notice.

Mod note: I copied this from another thread just so keep the info here, as well.

This is a list of NHL goalies who use the 580 (90 degree) break.

    OK, here goes...

The pictures won't let me copy and paste, but click the links for the evidence:

Giguere: Colorado Avalanches goaltending history : Jean-Sbastien Gigure
Hiller: Anaheim Ducks goaltending history : Jonas Hiller
Enroth: Buffalo Sabres goaltending history : Jhonas Enroth
Crawford: Chicago Blackhawks goaltending history : Corey Crawford
Raycroft (although he was demoted this past week): Dallas Stars goaltending history : Andrew Raycroft
Auld: Ottawa Senators goaltending history : Alex Auld
Smith: Phoenix Coyotes goaltending history : Mike Smith
Luongo: Vancouver Canucks goaltending history : Roberto Luongo

I think that about sums up the NHLers using 90 degree breaks.

Isn't there a difference in backhand protection too? I know the older 580 style gloves had a more of a "triangular" backhand to them. That was another easy way to tell. Didn't Reebok do something by putting the same backhand on all gloves to ease production, though?

Also, when looking at the backs of the gloves, you will notice the 90 degree has an 'offset' hand placement. This adds to the vertical close angle. I have a 60degree revoke, and a 90degree P3 and I absolutely love the 90 so much more than the 60.

I hadn't really compared the back of the gloves. Here's the 60 degree P3 glove:

If I remember, I'll try to post up a picture of the back of the 90 degree Revoke later.

I'm pretty sure the 90's have different backhands. At least 1 or 2 versions of it.

the 90 vs 60, is that the angle of the thumb in relation to the arm?

I've only seen pics comparing the angle to the rest of the hand, so I'm assuming it's the hand, though I could be wrong.

I've heard hiller say he likes the way the 90 degree break sits flush on his pads when down in the butterfly

Here is the same glove with two different options to show you the differences.

First one 590 glove, second 580 glove.

I still don't get it :( I guess what I need to know to understand it, is where that angled break refers to...
