Default Where Do Goalie Pads Go to Die?

It's something about which I've wondered often: where do goalie pads go to die? I've had, by my count, at least 12 sets of equipment. In every single case I've sold the old stuff, usually to pay for the new stuff. I've never thrown a piece of goalie gear away. Back a few years ago I would occasionally see an old pair of pads around area rinks on some high school goalies, but what happened to the rest of my sets? Certainly my old Bauer 1000 roller pads aren't piled under a mass of other sporting equipment in some house, are they? Are my old Heaton Helite IV Brodeur pads being worn by some youth goalie somewhere in the world?

What happened to your old equipment? Ever see it pop up unexpectedly?

I resold my first set of pads to a local used sporting goods store, and the one of the sales rep recognized the pads as his old ones. He showed me the spots where he modified the straps, and even the remnants of his name written in sharpie under one of those straps! It blew us both away since when I bought them they were about 10-12 years old, and I had used them for the last 6-7 years myself! These were almost 20 year old pads whose life started on the ice, then went on to the gym floor. Needless to say both of us were shocked as to how small the world actually is. I left with him thinking of buying them back and putting them on his "memories wall", but the last time I visited they were sitting on the shop shelf for sale.

Old pads either end up in someone's garage to die, or the shelves of used sporting goods stores waiting for some floor hockey goalie to pick them up.

    Cool thread, btw!

I recently threw all this stuff away by order of my wife...

I did open up one of the pads before they met their fate to see what the internals looked like.

My wife does not know I've been hiding this C/A in the trunk of my car for months...

Funny how the Brown logo is just a stitched-on fabric. The glove actually doesn't look half bad.

When our rink had a "goalie gear locker" I used to donate my old gear to the rink for others to use who either couldn't afford to buy a full set of goalie gear or who just wanted to try out playing in net. Kinda gross, really...lots of people using the same gear. Smelled really bad in there too. Eww. In college I sold all of my gear with the school colors to the rookies coming in behind me when I left. They were some saucy pads. Red, black and white accents. Should have kept them....ah well. Share the "school pride"...*cough*

Not sure what I'll do once I buy new pads. I'll probably hold on to my current set as a back-up. I'm a little nostalgic about my pads since they're rather "old school".

Sold 'em or donated them to the equipment locker at the rink. EWWW!!! But that is where I grabbed my first set of equipment from too. Too big or too small...just used it.

I did see a set of really old pillows as part of an arrow backstop in someone's backyard archery range...

Gave my glove and blocker to my little (BBBS), gave my old Louisville pads away to some outdoor ball hockey players I used to play with as a backup set in case they didn't have a goalie show up, and my chestie was the same as that Brown chestie that peanutbutterfly posted, except it was black, and smelled like absolutely awful, even for me. The protection was terrible to begin with, but since everything was wearing out, it was even worse. I threw it out.

My old pads just sit in my storage room now incase I ever need them for street hockey :) But any other gear I plan on replacing, I'll probably sell or donate away.

I find it absolutely hilarious that you are hiding an old crusty C/A in your car! :D
