Default Goalie Crease Network - Video Review Episode 7: Simmons 996 Pro Series Glove/Blocker

Don Simmons began creating Goaltending equipment over 20+ years ago. Over these past years Simmons has kept itself as a Small Canadian based business manufacturing quality goalie equipment for less. Their factory is located in Ft. Erie, Ontario, Canada. All of their goalie equipment is still manufactured in Canada, they do not outsource their manufacturing to China based factories.

Simmons sent me their 996 Pro Series pads, and we completed a review of those pads back in April of 2011 - http://www.goaliecrease.net/equipment-reviews/2178-goalie-crease-network-video-review-episode-4-simmons-996-a.html

They recently followed up with the matching 996 Pro series Catch Glove, and Blocker, which we're reviewing for you today.

    Features

Some of the real features I like about these Gloves would be the lightness, the pre-broken in feel, and the overall design (catch angle, cuff). The catcher is only 2.25lbs, and the Blocker is only 1.75lbs, and any time you can lose weight in Goalie equipment while still getting the protection is a plus.

    Construction 8/10

The construction of these gloves are equal to most of the major manufacturers gear, it's a well put together product for the price. This gear is perfect for those who are growing rapidly and will out grow their gear; and the rec league player who wants to save money and get something better than the major brands cheap Chinese products. Having said that, it's not just kids and recreational players that are using this gear, many goalies in junior, and even the pros are beloved Simmons fans. This Canadian constructed gear by far outweighs the cheap, Chinese made "Senior Level" gear that's available.

    Design 9/10

The glove catches like a dream for me. It's a perfect angle, and has a nice open face design which gives you great coverage. I've yet to have a pop out, all shots seem to get directed in to the pocket. The blocker is very light weight, and I was concerned with it's protection level; but I've had ZERO issues with it and definitely love the weight of the product. Lastly the way they design this set was instant wear ready. The break in period is absolutely nil.

    $339 for the catcher
    $229 for the blocker.

I guess I would have liked to see more close-ups of the blocker and catch glove (trapper), especially the back side.
Video special effects in the beginning were nice.

I meant to add more photos. I'll do that this afternoon for you. My bad.

When DS compares the glove to the 5500 is that in the feel, protection?

In feel, the way it closes and how the puck is caught.

You said in the review it wasn't quite as good as the 5500, in what way does it not stack up?
