    Default mask chin cup irritation

Does anyone have any kind of modification I can do to my sons mask chin cup that would help prevent skin irritation? He has developed a skin irritation from the chin cup probably from sweating, rubbing etc. Would some kind of material such as that used for the head band work if I somehow attached it into the cup? It would have to be fairly thin I would imagine and also removable for cleaning. Any and all ideas welcomed!

You could velcro a terry cloth piece in (ala head band material) but I think terry is relatively rough. Not sure if Jim of Sham Sweatband would/could mod his regular head bands. (His sham sweatbands are awesome... I'd bet he would definitely be able to do something like this. An with the issue of "dirty gear & skin infections" it could be a new product line for him.) I would use a thin piece of moleskin. The back of my chin strap got rusted and was starting to bug me. A little square of moleskin - no problems. You find it with the foot care stuff. (No its not moleskin.) You may want to check for latex...

Definitely contact Jim! He'll work with you to create a product, then let me know how it works out because I would be interest in that also!

I believe there are chin cup covers that are usually used by football players. They're like spandexy, but soft, and are removable and able to be cleaned. I'd call up a Sports Authority or something of that sort and see if they carry them.

If this is something he hasn't always had, have you tried to clean the chin cup? Try to clean the surface with an alcohol-based hand cleaning anti-bacterial gel.

ShockDoctor makes a nice chin cup that has a removable liner in it. I believe some of the guys on the Goaliestore.com website have used that in their masks. I have one of the small ones here, but don't plan to put it in my son's mask. The one in his mask now is already pretty nice and the strap through it is too wide for the ShockDoctor chin cup. I didn't want to change out the chin cup strap :)

Can I ask what KIND of irritation your son is getting? I had some issues with mine in several departments and have since fixed the issue but don't want to type out a long essay and perhaps not even hit on your son's issue.

He is getting a rash/rough skin on his chin where it sits in the cup. He never had it with his previous mask, but I believe that was due to it not fitting properly in the first place. His current new mask, an Eddymask fits much better(we had the previous issues with the wider head) and his chin fits great into the cup. He has been playing a lot more lately so I figured it must be do to sweating/rubbing etc. Any suggestions or comments would be greatly appreciated.

Hmm. The only thought I have other than what the others have already said (like getting/making a liner for it) would be to make sure he uses some sort of a really good lotion on his chin before and after. I know that the cold from the ice can magnify any irritation. I had a smiliar issue with an old mask (the velcro from the strap was in a really bad place in/on the cup) and I just started throwing facial lotion in my gear bag and made it a habit to put it on my chin before and after. It took care of the issue. Granted, it's probably "easier" for a female to do this than a male (especially youth!) but if it helps hopefully he can get in the routine.

thanks for all the great suggestions, I will definitely follow up and try a few of them. Yes, that would be some feat to get an 11 yr old to whip out the face cream in the dressing room.....perhaps in a few years.
