    Default flying with gear?

I took the plunge and told my womens' team I'd go to Tampa with them for a tournament in April. That's all well and good except for the whole flying part. (I'm absolutely filled with anxiety and terrified at the prospect of flying but that's a whole other issue.) Any tips on flying with gear? Is it ridiculously expensive? Has your gear ever been lost? Can I maybe just go on the plane completely dressed in all my gear, thus keeping everyone away from me due to stench and the psycho factor? Hahaha.

i believe you are allowed one carry on and one checked bag and there may be an upcharge on the checked(your gear) if it is over a certain weight. I am not 100% on this, someone please correct me if I am wrong, but i beleive that is how it works.

I travel quite a bit with my golf clubs and snowboards, so I may be able to add some insight for ya. Most airlines now charge for checked luggage and the weight limit is usually 50lbs. Anything over the 50lb limit is subject to added charges of course. You are allowed one piece of carry on luggage at no charge which makes for some good comedy as you get all kinds of people now trying in vain to carry on luggage that has no business being in the overhead compartments. I've never had any issues with lost baggage so far (knock on wood). I'm not sure if there is a limit to checked luggage though...I'm sure that if you have more than 2 pieces of checked luggage there is another surcharge that they will add. I always check 2 pieces of luggage with no issues. Goalie equipment will definitely be over 50lbs though, so you may want to call the airline and see what the charge will be for it...if you can...find a way to weigh the bag for them so you can have the most accurate number possible.

Hope that drivel helps you out....lol

I just flew back to Chicago for the Nike Bauer tournament with my son last week on AA his rolling suit case was $25.00 and his canvas goalie bag was $35.00. Now to keep his goalie bag under 50 pounds he puts his mask and skates in his rolling suit case works every time. His sticks go into a team stick bag that the team fund pays for so I don't know the cost you need to check with your airline carrier online they usually give you an idea of cost.

Oh jeez I would have forgotten about sticks too! Good call on the mask and skates in a separate bag too. Thanks for the input everyone. I have no idea what airline I'll be flying yet but I'll definitely ask them about it as the time gets closer.

Good luck getting skates inside an airplane...They wont even let you bring "torch" style lighters...why would they let you bring something with (basically) knives on the bottom? When i played roller that's how i always traveled though, skates/gloves in my carry on, everything else in the bag. If you're looking to keep weight down then throw all your gear in two checked bags and bring your clothes on your carry on. I've been on a couple dozen cross country trips so far with no problems with lost gear...always just bit the bullet and paid the extra for "overweight" bags and kept all my gear in my goalie bag. Then you still have another checked bag available for your sticks....
