Nice to see you back!

I know I've been away for a bit but I just recently came back from 6 month military tour on the border with Northern Iraq. So I come back and find out that my team from last season has decided to no longer participate in the league. They suggested another Istanbul team, where many of my teammates from last season were also playing. So at least some familiar faces...
After just 3 practices (two a week), and desperately lacking the necessary fitness level, I played in my first game this season. It was a practice game against Atak, who my previous team had narrowly beaten last season with me in goal. Their goalie wasn't able to make it so the other goalie from my team last season subbed in this game.
In a game that was relatively one sided, we ended up winning 11-2. Their first goal came early, off a breakaway. I was going down in my butterfly when somehow my left leg slipped and I ended up going down glove hand first. I tried to rotate my hips and cover the goal with my legs old-school style but the guy had already gone high glove side.
The second goal came much much later, when we had already increased our lead in the game. Two defenders were battling each other for the same puck behind the goal with two other players screaming that they were on the same team. In the end the puck came out and of course went right to the forward in the slot who said thank you and put it past me.
Apart from that, I had a couple of nice saves including a back post extended toe cover on a 1v0 and a splits glove catch. Got nice and tired but more so because I have yet to reach my pre-military condition, and not really because the game was so challenging.![]()
Nice to see you back!

Good to hear you're safe, and welcome back.
Weird to hear you say you don't feel you're in shape fresh off a six month tour of duty. For some reason I always think guys keep in optimal shape when on duty, be it military, police, or whatnot. It's horribly frustrating to me that I can be so good on the ice, beating people easily as both forward and goalie, and yet I honestly won't even meet minimum requirements to enter the police academy. Weird how athleticism doesn't necessarily translate into fitness or vice-versa.
Thanks IW. It's great to be back. This one was a little short, being a practice game and also because I was dead tired when I was writing it but the next ones will be up to par and I'll put them into the blog as well. Like last year...
I agree with you completely synesthete. I guess its also a matter of what you're doing. I lost almost 22 lbs. in my 47 days in boot camp! It was hot as hell, they were working us to the bone in regards to fitness and marching and being a vegetarian in an army full of carnivores didn't help either. Once I arrived at my unit though, I started to gain weight again. I had a desk job and because of the location and the risk involved in prolonged outdoor exposure, there was not much of an opportunity to exercise. I think during the 4 months we were there, we were allowed to 'exercise' just once (pull-ups) and that was because they were searching the barracks for illegal items in the meanwhile. I tried to do static and dynamic stretches to keep in shape but as you all know, its nowhere near whats necessary.
Incredibly interesting. Funny enough, I had considered going into the reserves at one time and one of my primary reasons for doing so was to lose weight. Not that I'm fat, but I'm 5'11" and 198, and I have a good 30 lbs I could lose.
Also funny enough, I was a vegetarian for four years, and stopped about two months ago. I stopped because I was overdoing it so much on cheese and carbs that I ballooned up to 217. Since stopping being a vegetarian, watching carbs, and taking some neato pills that don't make me feel like hell, I'm down to 198, which is where I was at the end of my college hockey days.
I can't believe they only allowed you guys to do some pull ups as exercise. That's ridiculous.
Go Vegan, and you won't have the trouble with the dairy and carbs. :)
I agree on the dairy part, but the carbs would get worse. You are aware that meat has very few carbs, right? I think you're thinking cholesterol. Which, granted, I have a problem with, too, but that's genetic.
Guys here are some pics that I took tonight for my hockey site at a pro league game. Take a look!

@Synesthete: 5'11" and under 200 isn't so bad. I'm 5'11" and 215 on a skinny day. It's all about how you carry it. My average weight now is about 220. In high school, I weighed 165 at 5'11". Spent 10yrs in the Marine Corps, and got massive. I'm a pretty athletic and flexible 220, and my diet consists of everything I see.

Unfortunately mine does, too... ...as I sit here finishing off ice cream and have popcorn in the waiting, haha.
