    Default Puck rotation

Last weekend we(MTN) were putting on a clinic in Yorkton. When we got back to the hotel one night we all developed a case of goalie syndrome. We got into a heated debate about puck rotation.

The main point of the arguement was that some students of ours and possibly a few instructors claim they can see the puck's rotation as it is coming at them.

So my question to the members of the goaliecrease forum is : has anyone ever been able to see this? and whether or not it matters in any way?

    looking forward to everyone's comments!

Sometimes I can't even see the puck coming at me!

Why would you need to see the rotation? Can it mess with rebounds that much?

Anyways, the only time that I can think of even having the chance noticing a rotation is if it is a long lame duck/knuckle puck type shot.

It somethin to look out for ... I assume you mean horizontal rotation and not vertical (end over end ie ducks )

I know in soccer a ball that doesn't have spin on it is harder to stop than one that does. I wear glasses normally unless I am playing sports. So noticing something like that would be tough.

I really think that heated debate was a waste of breath.

No you can't see the puck rotation, and if you could you'd have super-vision. Not only that, does it really even matter what way it's rotating? The angle that which your body is will determine the rebound direction, not the spin.

Well, if there's a printed picture on the upper surface and if it's a slow wrist shot, I'll see the top surface spinning so as to appear like a colorful blur.

It doesn't matter. In baseball, the ball has threads and it's moving in around 70-90+ MPH, but the ball rotation is visible and rotation makes a difference. The puck rotates but doesn't wobble, slide or curve like a ball. It doesn't have threads to catch air and affect direction. The puck, from a shooter's and goalie's standpoint is that it is going to rise and then come down unless the puck hits the net, post, person, stick or boards. The occational flubbed shot is going to come in weird but seeing the puck rotation isn't going to matter. Your eyes are following the entire puck.

This is kind of silly. An all black object, with no real markings on it, hurled at you intensionly at upwards of 80mph you cant tell me people can tell whether its rotating or not. I know i dont play at a high level, but i have better than 20/20 vision and i have never noticed that.

Goalie syndrome man..we're kind of nit pickers in a way. Talk/argue about anything goalie related.

I will try post my thoughts sometime tomorrow when all my assignments are done.

I hope Travis finds time to get on here as well as I believe his brother has been one of the guys who says he can see it.

I'm not kidding. Some people claim they can sometimes see the rotation of the puck as it comes at them. I disagreed.

    My thoughts are that :
    1. no they can't. Unless they can slow down time, I personally don't think it's possible
    2. I thought it didn't matter but I know I have had the long slapper turn a little diagonal in the air and start curving.
    3. I think you can dictate which way it rotates by the way the shot is released, and by what handed shooter it is. Different from seeing it though.

I liked the baseball comment as that was one of my arguments.

My brain is kind of fried right now. Our heated debate escalated into a lot more topics and variables then this, but this was the main one.

I was really hoping for someone to say they could see it to see what their comments were. oh well.
