I agree Werk, but you can see their reasoning on DP's contract. He was a young, promising goalie, who was already playing pretty well at the NHL level. So, you lock him up for 10 years, at a pretty reasonable 4.5M per season. Compare that to guys like Luongo, Brodeur, Giguere (at the time) who are making 6M and more - you get excellent value while he's in his prime, and as he declines, his salary is not an albatross. Not to mention they signed that deal before the cap system was in, which made even more sense.

That he got injured so much was a gamble on the Islanders part - which they are losing quite badly.

The Yashin contract was absolute stupidity - ask any Sens fan.
