All right I would definitely say that I am superstitious goalie I have a routine that I follow every game:
-I pack my bag the exact same way before every ice time
-I put everything on from left to right, socks, skates, pads, blocker then glove(I'm a full right) etc.
-Unlike most goalies, I like to be the last out of the dressing room and the last one on the ice (doesn't work that well now in Beer League)
-I don't use a water bottle on the top of my net as I feel it hangs down below the crossbar and gives a target to the shooter
-I stretch in the left side corner of our end before I take warm up (stretch in the same order of course)
-Before the puck drop I do two post to post shuffles before giving the ref the 'nod'
-At every whistle I skate to my glove side corner
-I hate changing anything in my game (I don't tape my stick until its totally warn down, I don't wash my Jersey, and I don't cut my hair until my girlfriend complains it's too long and if I have to change something I'll do it after a stinker of a game. Not a shut out or a really good game)
This my seem crazy but as one of my buddies says about me "B-Hill, we wouldn't expect anything less from a left-handed, Ginger Goalie"![]()
I like to get to the rink early, lay my stuff out, fill up my water bottle, re-tape my stick if it needs it, then get dressed why shooting the breeze with my teammates.
Then when I'm waiting for the zamboni to finish up, I like to get into a mental zone.
I have a few rituals but my one main thing is my water bottle. Nobody else touches it. I always come off after warm ups and fill it myself. Team equipment guy knows not to touch it, but sometimes he forgets so I dump it out and refill it myself. Also if I'm backing up, I consider it bad luck to have my water bottle filled.
Mine is similar to B-Hill. Put my stuff on Left to Right,
I've discovered something that only applies to the drop-in games I play in...I have to be in a specific net each time or else I do poorly lol. If another goalie takes "my net" it throws me off and I end up losing more frequently.
My pregame will be put to the test tomorrow. I have my annual physical tomorrow about three hours before my game, so I have to pack tonight, put my bag in the car in the morning, then go to the doctor's office right after work and straight to the rink. Let's see how flexible I can be with my pregame!
I promised someone I would tape my pregame stretching routine, but I can't remember who and I can't remember in what thread, so this one looks as good as any, lol.
Simple stretching routine I do. Only takes one minute, and these are literally the only stretches I do before a game. If you've seen my videos, I typically don't need to make extreme/flashy saves, so I don't do any extreme stretches before games. I'm pretty naturally flexible, so these stretches are just to get the muscles working a little bit.
pre-game warm up have our best shooter give me some glove side shots. Bless myself before the faceoff ( I need divine intervention).
As far as pre-game rituals, I don't think I have too many...I like to get there at least an hour before my ice time, so I can get dressed slowly and not feel rushed. I do always go right side first for skates and pads, and will fill up my bottle after I am half dressed. I think that's all of them!
