I think it's a case of an inferior squad using an available tactic in order to win the game. It's also a complete waste of money for the ticket holders. I am quite surprised the Flyers weren't assessed a delay of game penalty. Make it a bench minor as it was apparently under Laviolette's direction that the Flyers players just stand around.

The goalies probably liked it - each passing second gets them to a lower GAA.

Love it. For those of you who don't know, I'm an avid writer about sport theory and an advocate of largely unregulated play. I hate when leagues see stuff like this and go bat **** crazy and start throwing "illegal defense" penalties into the mix like basketball and football did. I'd much rather the NHL get more serious about calling penalties for not keeping the puck in motion or, as Kerry Fraser phrased it, keeping the game in "continuous action." Fraser: The correct assessment of the Lightning-Flyers situation

The onus here should be on the team with the puck to advance it appropriately, not calling out a defensive tactic that's perfectly legal. If you aren't smart enough to know how to advance through the trap, then I think that's more embarrassing than being called out for playing the trap.

Dumb move. Now, instead of possibly breaking the trap (or at least dumping the puck in once they crossed the center line), the Flyers have a defensive zone faceoff. Looks like the Bolts got what they wanted anyway. I wish that Tampa would have scored off of that draw!

I get your point and agree with that aspect of it. However i hate the trap! To me it was invented so that a lesser team could compete with better teams. All you need is a good Goalie, and a group of players to buy in and play really disciplined and your set. I have also never been a fan of dump and chase hockey.
I dont think any new rules should be adopted though. I think this was a one off thing. Really not many teams play trap style hockey anymore anyway. I just though it was cool to see someone stand up and say, hey this isnt how we want to play the game and were not gonna do it. Like i said its too bad nobody did this back in the dead puck era.

This was lame on both parts. One to bring the puck to a stand still and the other to allow it.

After reviewing it from the beginning, it's okay to regroup in your own zone but to just hang out is lame. Moving forwards opens up passing opportunities.

I like it. No... I love it. So much so that I emailed this clip to my team and asked how they felt about using a similar trap on the very puck-hungry scoring line of the team we're playing on Sunday. If we sell it better, we'll be breaking out behind them left and right!

I think the Flyers need to man up, and grow a set. You're scared of the 1-3-1, holy crap, skaters are supposed to be tough. It's unbelievable, if its kicking your arse, then find a way to beat it. Don't go into the corner with the puck and act like a kid, and take the puck and go home to cry. Frustrates me to say the least.
