An odd little tidbit I heard from the Carolina Hurricanes/Calgary Flames game the other night. 'Canes callup Mike Murphy went into the game in relief of starter Cam Ward and played the final 9 minutes of the game. In the dying minutes of the game, he went to the bench for the extra attacher with the 'Canes down 6-4. Jarome Iginla scored an empty netter to make it a three goal spread at 7-4, but Carolina came back in the final minute and scored twice more, ending the game in a 7-6 loss to the Flames.
Because Murphy was the goalie of record when the empty net goal was scored, and that goal ended up being the game winning goal, he takes the loss without ever actually giving up a goal. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, he now holds the distinction of being the first goalie in NHL history to take a loss before allowing a goal.
