I saw that... apparently he's going to be releasing a statement later on tonight through his Facebook page as to why he wasn't there.

Good for him. As long as he is tactful about declining the invitation I don't have an issue with it. Many professional athletes have declined white house invites (democrat and republican).

I like TT and have mixed feelings about this. The invite is a team honour and as such I wish that he could have put aside his personal political beliefs and celebrated the distinction with his team. On the other hand I respect him for having the conviction to stand up for his personal beliefs. At the end of the day we are all individuals. I don't believe he is using the opportunity to get on a soap box so I have to support his decision.

I'd have a problem with it if he was pulling a Kanye West and acting like a spoiled brat celebrity running his mouth irresponsibly. The statement he made was clear, concise, and mature.

Im a little on the fence about this. What i know about Thomas i like very much.
On one hand i think he should have been with his team, on the other hand quite frankly im not sure i would visit the White House if i was invited. But im about as non-political a person as you can get as i think government whether Canadian, American whatever is full of corruption.
Have you ever had a dream that you were so sure was real? What if you could not wake up from that dream, how would you tell the difference between the real world and the dream?

His absence definitely overshadowed the visit. What's more interesting is the response that people aren't surprised since he's not a team guy. I was totally surprised to hear that and frankly disappointed.

This event isn't about politics; it's about being honored by the President on behalf of the country. To make this about politics, which Thomas has, is appalling. It's a slippery slope, and I think it's sad that someday this is going to lead to a country and its head of state not being able to honor a US team's championship.
