Why you SHOULD NOT stand on that ball is because when you fall everyone else will DIE laughing at you and you will DIE of being laughed at BY THE DEAD

Hey Gang,
Here is why you will never see an athlete I train at Revolution Conditioning stand on a ball...http://hockeytrainingpro.com/wordpre...ability-balls/

That is such a stupid thing to do! Poor bastard.
I liked doing stability balls. Personally, I feel the idiocy in that fall isn't in the stability ball but rather the athlete's dumb attempt at jumping from one to another. What that accomplishes, I'm not sure. But I feel I've gained a lot of core strength and 360 degree fine motor skill by standing on a stability ball when I used to train. Whether it was doing curls, squats, throwing a medicine ball, or simply standing on one, I think it does a lot for you. That said, I think an extreme balance board also does a lot for you, but in a different way since it inherently keeps your feet on a plane.
For sure, i think there would be great benefit in balance excersises with a balance ball. But like you said, jumping from ball to ball is just asking for an injury. And how much must it suck to get an injury not from the activity that your trainig for, but during the training for that activity.
It is just a matter of evaluating the risk: reward in any exercise. Plus the ball puts the ankles in a inverted position based on the contour of the surface which is opposite the position that a goalie and most athletes for that matter need. We can train the core in a much more functional way than standing on the stability ball.
Extreme balance board is a great option, bongo board, indo board, single leg balance on BOSU. Lots of options that can give you the benefit without the risk. But if you love standing on the ball then go for it have fun.
Cheers,
Maria
