    Default Hand-eye and reaction time

I'm looking for some new and possibly fun hand-eye or reaction time drills. I already juggle and do the one where you face the wall and someone throws the ball. Just looking for new drills to change it up a bit. I also do one where you're on your knees or stomach you have somebody drop a tennis ball and you have to get up and catch the ball before it hits the ground again.

I actually have a full sheet of things to improve hand/eye that I give to my goalies that I coach at the start of the season. I can't find it right now but somethings on the list do not relate to hockey in any way.

This may sound a little weird but playing Pinball is a great tool to work on hand/eye. Back in my playing days, I had one of those table top pinball games that I got from Walmart for like $20. Would put 30 mins a day on it after practice or on off days.

Another fun activity in ping pong with a friend or playing against the other side of the table.

Other fun activities can be tennis, badminton, baseball/softball, table top hockey, skeet/trap shooting, etc.

Something more permanent/long term can include karate, boxing, and other martial arts. With those, you get the hand/eye (punching/blocking) and the conditioning.

I always found that the best drills for hand/eye are non-hockey related and are things you do with some friends or what not. Heck, even some VIDEO GAMES are great for improving hand/eye like a shooting game or NHL, NFL, and stuff like that. (just don't sit in front of them all day...).

I'll see if I can't recall that list tomorrow and type it up.

EDIT: My all time favorite "drill" was extremely simple and I found it to be an utter blast...you take a normal piece of paper hold it over your head then drop it. After you drop it, you try and catch it at your knees. I'd do this 2-3 times a week, 50 times per day. Then I'd record how many I caught that day and would try and set a high score the next day.

Sounds stupid but paper never falls consistently and moves all over the place making it difficult to catch. It's cheap, simple and it really works. For an added challenge, turn a fan on near you so you get a lot more movement from the paper. Even smaller and/or lighter pieces of paper make for a bigger challenge.

Simply get out and play catch with a baseball. Helped me tremendously.

Thanks for the ideas. I agree with improving it using other methods then hockey. I'm really interested in seeing that sheet. Is there any that could be done pre game or practice? Myself and the other goalie are at the rink a lot so we might as well be doing something useful.

Ive always wanted to get one of those reaction balls. They look like a mutant bouncy ball with a bunch of bulges, giving it random angles. Throw it at a wall and play catch by yourself.

Also I'd recommend doing a lot of stick handling and using your feet. You'll gain a better sense of puck awareness.

If you want to stay interested in the activity, try other sports. Soccer, Hacky-sack, and ping pong would all offer good coordination skills.

Then when you are done, work on stamina and chase a chicken like in Rocky.
