    Default Butterfly Widening

First off, I am aware of the butterfly widening challenge, but I need to know butterfly widening exercises. I go to the butterfly and try to widen it and hold it, but I don't think this is working quite so well as I would have liked. Anyone have any good exercises for butterfly widening?

There are exercises in the butterfly widening challenge. So if you know about it, then you know the exercises already. :)

    They work.

    Use them.

Widening it and holding it are two different things first u need the flexibility to get it Wich Maria's stretches will help. Second it takes a tonne of strength in your hip flexors and groins to hold it. Elevated hip presses are awesome for your flexors and there's a tonne of groin exercises on the net you can google for it. Keep in mind not everyone's are quite the same so u may not get that ideal butterfly your looking for (enter the double break pad!) I stretch every single day and my butterfly and splits suck compared to the other goalie on my team and that freak o nature doesn't stretch at all and barely during warm up! And if your compared us side by side he looks like a body builder and I look like the gumby

a lot depends on your age and flexibility. As a 41 year old, nope, nothing has helped. Foam rolling, stretches, nada. your bone structure plays a part as well, as Maria points out. Not a big deal, I adapt my style around it. I'm playing more of a hybrid style and moving towards more of a standup goalie, which will also prolong my career (in the beer leagues, mind you) since it's causing a lot less hip strain.

God I'm old. I pulled a muscle just watching the olympics.

My question would be, do you follow along with the timing in the video? It seems like the stretches are held for a really short time. Though it seems like more of a dynamic stretch. Just curious.
