Hey Scottish!
Yeah, this sensation is pretty common and if it is not painful it is not really something to worry about - although I think of it the same way you do - if we can make it stop, let's do that. Here is the issue, your knee cap is basically engulfed by the quadriceps tendon and that tendon attaches below the knee on the front of your shin (there is a little bump about 1-2" below the bottom of your knee cap - that is where your tendon attaches). When you go into the butterfly you flex your knee which puts tension on the quadriceps tendon and therefore some 'pressure' on the knee cap, then when you internally rotate into your butterfly, the quadriceps tendon wants to pull in a straight line (not around a bend), so it can pull the knee cap a little bit out of its groove which gives you that clicking feeling. The kneecap is free to wiggle around in there to some extent so this is what happens.
Now if your quadriceps are tight to start with, then that will make this tracking issue more pronounced and could make it painful. Here is my keep it simple suggestion - stretch your quadriceps (like standing heel to bum stretch) and when you are doing your foam rolling roll your quadriceps a bit too. Start with that and see if it reduces the clicking sensation. How does that sound??
Cheers,
maria
