Default Your one most pressing off-ice training question!

    Hi Gang,

Paul & I are on holidays this week - staying home and doing some home reno projects (attacked a little lathe & plaster, now I am painting some doors - I get all the dumb jobs and Paul gets to use all the power tools).

Anyway, this time off has given me some good time to think about new topics for videos and articles, but I want to make sure I am posting the info that is the MOST valuable for you, so please take 15 seconds right now to reply to this email with any off-ice training/injury prevention question you have.

    Thanks so much.
    Cheers,
    Maria

    Hey Maria,
Don't know if this is what you are looking for, but lately I have been playing and everytime I play I stretch in the room, get on the ice and I stretch for about 5 mins, and once the game starts, I have AWFUL pain in my left shin on the front, not in the back but in the front. What the heck is happening?!? It's like someone is stretching my shin muscles out and like stretching and it feels like stabbing pain. Is there anything you know that would affect this and anyway that I could fix it besides seeing physio?

    Hello Maria,

Is there a workout/stretch you would recommend to someone who has either never played goalie or hasn't played goalie in many years? As in, would there be a specific work out(s) that would help gear someone up, or should the above mentioned people just jump right in and do what everyone is doing?

I'm just curious and feel free to ignore me...is there any form of off-ice conditioning where I can drink a six pack, smoke a pack of cigarettes and eat large amounts of calories every day and still muster the energy to play hockey once in a while?

Seriously though, and this is really bothering me-Every time I go out to play hockey I get an intense pain in my right elbow about 30 minutes after I play that lasts about 4-6 hours. I have a vague understanding that it probably has something to do with the load put on my right arm by the relatively light blocker/stick combination, but I'm curious if there's some sort of conditioning I can do to train my elbow.

You should definitely do some stretching and conditioning to prepare for your return - I will put something together for you, but just to clarify - are you looking for a workout for someone who is just getting off the sofa for the first time in 37 years, or someone who is already pretty active, but just returning to goaltending?

While I put that together, these stretches should get you started:

    Thanks for the question.
    Cheers,

Ha ha - this is a good one - my suggestion is high intensity interval training for 11 hours per day - yes I realize you will have to quit your job, but we all have to make sacrafices.

Now for the elbow pain - is it on the inside or outside of your elbow (if you hold your arms at your sides with your palms facing forward is it sore on the side closest to your body - the medial aspect or the side away from your body - the lateral aspect?

Here are a few suggestions - are you death gripping your stick all the time? If so - don't do that. Yes, that is a smart a$$ remark. I do have some other ideas, but I will have to shoot a video...stay tuned.

    Cheers,
    Maria

My specific situation would be: 27, not out of shape...but not in it either & never played, borrowed inline goalie equipment 5 times from 21-27. Just finished purchasing first ice set and I am preparing for: stick-n-puck, drop-ins & beginner leagues.

    *edit*
Although i'm currently preparing for s-n-p, drop-ins & beginner leagues...my goal is to climb my way up to as high of a league as my skill will allow. Realizing, of course, I'm not going to be getting to any paid position starting so late in life. Or atleast the chance of that happening are slim to none.

Archi- To be perfectly honest, if you're just going to stick and puck and beginner leagues, I wouldn't really be all to concerned with over exerting yourself since you only really exert yourself as much as you need to to stop the puck. At that level, they're just hoping to score and really it doesn't take a perfect form or style to stop it. You'll find as you play what areas are necessary to work in order to do it day in day out without any issues.

Maria- When I stand with my arms to the side palms forward the pain is mostly on the inside but partially straight behind it as well. And who the hell said I have a job? Those things are for losers! Just kidding, I just haven't been allowed to work for over 2 years now because the Canadian government doesn't like Americans taking jobs they're well qualified for with the recession on. Bastards.
