Default Proper way to hold your goalie stick? What do you do?

How do you hold your goalie stick? What is the proper way?

    Example 1
Stick fits perfectly in the slot of the blocker.

    Example 2
Stick doesn't fit creating a gap.

I tend to hold it like Example 2, and I feel that it's wrong, since it creates the gap, and that's now how the blocker was designed. But Example 1 just doesn't feel right to me, I don't feel like I have full control of the stick.

This is one thing I've never talked about with my goalie coach before.

What do you do? (Your own pictures would be great)

I have to say your way is really odd. I've never ever ever seen anyone try to hold the stick that way, haha.

The "proper" way: Stick hand index finger

    Example 2 = wrong
You've been keeping that a secret long enough my friend. LOL.
You're using your thumb to get a grip on the top edge of the paddle. Strange.
Some goalies, back in the day, would have their index and middle finger on top of the paddle to get leverage on the stick. Think of doing the Victory sign and plop that on top of the paddle and grip the stick with your ring and pinky fingers. I can see that this wouldn't work well if you had to go paddle-down.

I hold it like Example 1.

Mike Morrison who played a lot of minor pro and bounced around a little in the NHL has some pretty cool sticks. He used Itech GSPRO's before he retired and he would have them custom made so that a small triangle was taken out of the paddle where your index finger would be so he could get a better grip on the stick.<br>

And surprisingly enough I found a picture of it lol. Although not the GSPRO.

When I get back from my Vacation here, I'm going to work on this. It just feels so weird to hold it any other way. I'm terrible.

I just got introduced to the proper hold (example 1) a few weeks ago. Suddenly, pucks are stopping at my stick instead of bouncing on through. :)

i got a quick wake up on stick holding, my second game ever I put paddle down to stop puck that was shot from the teams zone. I put paddle down to stop it, looked up and saw they were cheering as the puck had slipped right under my paddle and into the goal...... very embarrasing! lol

Eagle used to sell a stick called The Claw that had the index finger notch. I used them in high school and absolutely loved them.
