Could be your pads are too small and that your missing the knee landing area
This is a discussion on Butterflying in skates? within the Proper Technique/Style forums, part of the The Clinic category; I've been practicing the butterfly with my skates on, and I've also been playing inline hockey (YES!), but the problem ...
I've been practicing the butterfly with my skates on, and I've also been playing inline hockey (YES!), but the problem I have that keeps popping up is that when I butterfly in skates I land on the front of my pad more than the knee wing. I know this isn't the right way to do it but I'm having trouble fixing it. Any suggestions?

I think he's not getting pad rotation. So he's landing on the front of the pad. I'd like some video of you trying this more than pictures. I have a feeling it's the looseness of the straps.

I used to have a similar problem when I first started.....as I experimented with my straps (loosening them) my pads rotated a lot better. Make sure you a knot in the toe string about 1" from where it meets the toe bridge, that will help as well.

What I mean is that without skates I can butterfly perfectly, but in skates it feels weird.
I usually do it right, but it only happens when I get a hard shot.

What I mean is on a hard shot I get sloppy and try to cover the five-hole as quickly as I can.
I like to tie my pads as tight as I can get them because they're very wide and the go sideways on my legs if I tie them loosely.

They're supposed to move sideways to create a blocking surface. Or do you mean, over rotation? So much they're almost backwards?
Try this way.. Somewhat tight skate strap, and the next few up the calf should be one or two notches less than taught. Then behind the knee just enough to stop your knee from coming out of the landing area of the pad. Top strap (if there is one) super loose.
Todays pads are made to be barely strapped on at all, nice an loose.
