    Default VH issues

    Hey Y'all

I am having issues when i drop into a VH. I am not sure that a) I am doing it right and b) I can have complete sealed cover so get caught in between when in a game situation.

here is a rough picture of what I look like in VH

Pull your left leg in right up against the other pad. That's the biggest issue. I'd say get that blocker over the pad but it might be tough covering the front of the 5 hole with your stick due to your height. Other than that you look pretty good. :)

yup agreed...looks good just pull the leg in and remember...a VH is supposed to be used as a reaction save. You should never be just sitting in your VH.. there is a fine line to the VH breaking down as well, if you know this great! if not I would be glad to explain it to you.

I was told the VH is just to block the puck from a reasonably small, in close area. Not for making a save, just to let the puck hit you and stay out.

I dont like using it that often, but when for some reason my body decides that is the save selection I am going to use, I want to make sure I can actually do it properly, due to the leg not being pulled tigh I have had 2 goals scored on me where its hit my chest and droped down and trickled through legs.

I will make sure that i pull everything tight though when using it, I have been practicing when I have time in my net though

HockeySchoolDropout - what Hildy is referring to is that many goalies get themselves into trouble when they get into the VH position well before the shot is released. The save itself is definitely a block as it is designed to close as many holes as possible, but think of it this way...would we ever want be in a butterfly before the shot release? Even in a bliocking situation, the goalie should NOT be in the save selection before there is even a shot. Obviously not, as this would be frought with peril. The same can be said about the VH as it is still something that should be used as a reaction in the proper situation.

Scottish - if the initial shot is hitting your chest and dropping down this will be a good thing once you seal up the legs as this will lead to whistles, and I don't know about the rest of you, but I love whistles! Oh, one last thing...when you look at the picture of your VH you can see the face of the vertical pad is directly behind the blocker. This is a bad case of double coverage that could also contribute to a goal through the legs, under the stick, because the blocker and stick could be lifted by the pad and thighrise at a very inopportune time. Make sure the blocker is to the side of the pad face(the pad is on the inside of the blocker and blocker arm) and that the horizontal knee is pulled in tight to the instep of the vertical leg. Hope this helps.

Should I angle my pad slighlty away from post to allow my blocker to drop a little lower instead of as I have here where my arm is resting on my thigh rise???

You want the pad in line with the post, otherwise you'll just create another gap. Your blocker should basically wrap around the side so your stick is flat on the ice, preventing a puck from being slid through your legs. I was instructed the blade of your stick should be directly in front of your vertical pad.

I dont do this often, but i want to integrate it into my game more. I find its really good for those quick cross ice passes in front of the net that you never quite get over quick enough for. With this tecnique its way faster to quickly slide over and make that pad save cause your pads already down and you can push hard off the post.

I would only use this if the shooter is so close he can't lift the puck over the vertical pad.
