I just got into goaltending about 2 months ago and I couldn't butterfly to save my life. I would always land on the face of my pads or they would be slightly angled off the ice instead of facing the boards no matter how loose my pads were, and I focused on keeping my toes towards the boards.
Today I got to the ice and I decided to loosen up the straps on my knee lock and the very top strap i found was just tight enough to keep my pads from fully turning sideways towards the boards.
Anyway, every shot I could do a full butterfly and I was able to close up my 5-hole very well! I just wanted to share my excitement although how pathetic it is haha.
....next I need to work on b-fly slide

I am having the same problem. I can't get the butterfly to close completely, it ends up being a 'V' with the bottom touching but not the top. Do I keep loosening straps? I bought flex toe to help, but with only 1 hour a week, it's hard to progress.
I'm no expert by any means but what I did was loosen my highest strap all the way and the knee strap and lock very loose as well. (the rest of my straps are fairly loose as well) Tie a knot in your toe straps 1" from the pad. This is what I've done and it's worked for me.
The V at the closure seems to be a tricky problem. Im having a difficult time getting rid of it as well. I went to a stick and puck yesterday with my new pads. No pants just knee protectors, pads, glove & blocker. I spent about half an hour adjusting straps and playing with everything. Once i got them dialed in i took a pen and marked the strap holes that i used so its easy to set them up the same again from now on.
The other thing i did which seemed to help the V was i peeled the velcro back that holds the knee cradle and the knee flap together. I then pushed the knee cradle more into the pad and re-attached the velcro. It seems to help pull the pad upright in the butterfly. Im going to keep evaluating the adjustments and tweak where nescessary.
It wasnt pretty!

I get a half-butterfly. My right pad rotates into butterfly but my left stays flat. I have 32+1 McKenney 370 pads. When I am just goofing off or stretching - waiting til the team needs the goalie for practice - my butterfly is tight with no real 5 hole. When I face shots in practice / games I get the 1/2 butterfly.
I can concentrate on driving knees down w/o pressure, but not with pressure. Movement hasn't become automatic yet. = My thoughts. What do ya think?
