    Default 1/2" too sharp?

I had my goalie skates sharpened at what the local shops normal is for goalie skates (which turned out to be 3/4") I could barely catch the ice with my edge to push off with, so I asked him to sharpen it a little more and he said he made it a 5/8" and now I'm able to grab the ice pretty well with only a few slip outs, my shuffling I can feel is slightly more difficult but nothing to worry about.

Should I try a Next step up to a 1/2" or do you guys think that's a little too sharp? I feel like I could benefit a little more with a slightly sharper skate for my slides but I don't want to limit my shuffling

I've been using 1/2" for a while now and I love it. One of the goalie coaches we work with here in St. Louis - Bruce Racine (who is awesome, by the way) - recommends that his goalies eventually get to that cut as well. I'd try it and see what you think.

Go for it, there is no universal limits to depth of hollow for goalies. It truly depends on your skating ability, your size/strength, and the hardness of the ice you are playing on. For example, in High School, I weighed 275 lbs (all muscle) and played on extremely hard ice at my home arena, I used 3/8"and 1/4" hollows when playing at home; but on rinks like Parade in Minneapolis, where the ice is quite soft, I would run a 5/8". Presently I normally run about 1/2" because most of the ice in Colorado is pretty soft. I pride myself on my skating ability, and have very strong legs, therefor a more aggressive hollow is advantageous to my play. However, if you don't have very strong legs, or are not a very strong skater, a shallower hollow may benefit you.

I use 1/2 sharpen. It made a huge positive difference in my skating. With 5/8 I just kept blowing out when trying to do a butterfly push..Plus I didn't get nearly as much power on any pushes.

I want to try 3/8 when I get back on the ice.

I would recommend a 1/2 sharpen as well. I've used it since I started and it's a great even for shuffling and getting power on your butterfly slides. It really comes down to personal preference though too. Maybe try out a bunch during an off time or something see what you like.

I've been using 3/8" for nearly a year and I love it. I went to it from 1/2" and I'll never go back. It took a bit of getting used to, but its worth it. I never slip on pushes and stopping is so much better.

Try 1/2". If you find that it's too sharp, you can take the bite off by rubbing the skate blade on the plastic/wood door sill to the bench, penalty box, entrance.
