Default Giving goaltending a try - 6 year olds

    Hey all,

I assistant coach my daughter's IP group, and it became known that I was a goalie too, so I was asked to help introduce some of the older girls to the position. I want to setup some basic drills, as I'll only have about 45 minutes with each girl (2 at a time).

I'm not going to venture into too much technical stuff, as this is just a chance for the girls to put on the gear and try it out before they hit novice next year.

I was thinking of doing a few T-pushes, maybe some shuffling and show them the butterfly. Most girls that age I have seen can't lift the puck enough to warrant being able to cover the net much. I thought I would shoot a few pucks while they're in the butterfly and get them to deflect them with the stick. Any other really basic thing I should look at?

    Thanks!

Basic thing will be rebound control and covering the puck since hockey (or any sport) at that age is basically "herd ball." Most goals are scored on rebounds or scrambles, so it'll be important to impart rebound control and covering the puck early.

When I coached a few kids in the position a few years back one of the big things I worked on was making sure they squared up to the shooter and puck. I told them there was a cable from the puck to the center of there chest, so when the puck moved they move appropriately.

Syn - the IP age group doesn't play real games. This is a short session to let the girls moving to novice give it a try and see if they want to play goal next year.

It's mostly about getting them to move in the goalie gear, and take some shots. I'm thinking of 10-15 mins basic stance and movement, 5-10 mins squaring up/recovery and 10-15 mins of taking some shots. If they don't like getting hit by the puck, they won't want to play goal next year! That should give me enough time for explanation/demonstration and correction.

Considering that they are 6 year olds, you might want to spend more time on basic stance and taking shots. Have an extra goalie on hand to be your demonstrator while you do all the talking.

Good idea caveman. I don't think any of the other coaches are goalies, and we're limited with the number of coaches due to insurance etc. I'll see what I can dig up - 7 am on Saturday and Sunday = not a lot of volunteers!

I will adjust my times to work more on basic stance. It all starts from there!
