do you use a stick ?![]()
This is a discussion on Too slow on the 5 hole within the Proper Technique/Style forums, part of the The Clinic category; I get beat all the time on 5-hole, I see the puck and react as soon as I see it ...
I get beat all the time on 5-hole, I see the puck and react as soon as I see it go off the stick yet I can't get down fast enough for the puck to hit my pads, the few saves I make that way I end up trapping the puck underneath my pads. (I'm talking shots closer than the hash marks, further than that I can react fast enough to drop down in time)
I'm a fairly taller guy, 6'2 so in my stance I suppose my knees are further from the ground than most, should I try lowering my knees in the stance? Or maybe just as soon as the shooter gets closer begin to lower my knees but not commit?

Another option - stay standing up. For shots in that close, unless you are real close to the ice already, stay up, let the shot hit you in the pads, and either direct the puck away with your pads/stick, or smother the rebound.

When executing a butterfly save, a lot of people try and "drop in to a butterfly" but that's not a good technique. You need to DRIVE your knees to the ice as hard and as fast as you can. This is something you can work on in warm-ups, or when the play is dead in the opposite end of the ice.
I had this problem a lot when I started off and I had a buddy film me during practice. I noticed my stance was way to wide, so closing the 5 hole in time tostop a puck wasn't happening. You're 4 inches taller than me so I wouldn't think our mechanics would be too different. Get some film of yourself and check it out, it helps a bunch.
If you have any pics, they would be helpful. You might very well be standing up too much and would benefit with a slightly lower stance. Perhaps your pads are a bit small and you would benefit from some + inches on top of the thigh rise. And you might also be using the wrong length of stick, which could be pushing the blade out further and decrease the blocking area of the blade.
Just some thoughts!
I know sometimes when I go to drop down to butterfly, my stick ends up lifting up from the ice briefly leaving me exposed. So like what other people suggest, record yourself doing a butterfly a few times or have a friend watch from infront to catch any issues.
I had the problem of just dropping into the butterfly and to practice driving my knees down, when I'm at the gym I get one of the sandbells (picture below just in case), get into my stance with it on the ground under me and drive down into the butterfly. It's kind of padded, but also firm and doesn't slide around really bad.
I also use that to work on getting up with the correct leg.
I wear 36+2 pads and I've lately been using a paddle height of 27", im not sure it's a equipment issue because when I go down to butterfly I end up smothering the puck under my pads sometimes which to me I think means I'm doing Somerhing wrong mechanically or I'm just not fast enough yet. I'll try to get some pics soon.
Like I was saying before, it may not be a speed or equipment issue. It may be the fact that your so spread in your stance that your 5 hole is gigantic and there's no chance of closing it up at all. It was really uncomfortable to close my stance up so that I could close the 5 hole and make the low saves.
