Default Hip Injuries and the Butterfly Style

I just throw this out there and this isnt to start a pissing match about styles.

Have you folks noticed a increase in hip cartilage problems in your peers? It seems just about everyone plays butterfly style nowadays which is fine with me. It seems however that there has been a correlating rise in hip labrum problems. Another pro just went down for the year (sorry I cant remember who it is but I think it might be the other goaler for the Wild). Having been done since 1993-1994, I am out of the loop about what happens at the local rinks but it seems that during the last several years more than handful of pros have had this injury.

P.S. This could be incidental and unrelated to the style of play. I used the buttefly but was more of a stand up in my time. I'm looking at a replacement down the road but my surgeon says it is degenerative rather than a discreet injury. During my playing days, I never had a specific hip injury other than occasional soreness which just goes with the job.

Is the soreness regular? I have sore hips, and my family has never had hip problems. I use Bfly as my main technique but find I get pressure on my hips after a gmae which resides the next day.I find sometimes if I walk up stairs my hips get sometimes "locked" feelings which they never did before I played. Is this normal or are my hips screwed from 3 years of butterfly goaltending?

Soreness is normal, you're stretching them out all the time playing butterfly. If you would stretch properly and regularly that soreness would subside but most of us don't do that. There's nothing 'screwed' about them, that's just general wear and tear of playing the position.

I may have been a little less than precise with my language and I DONT want anyone to think that I believe b-fly leads to hip injuries. See my note in that regard. You play long enough and things happen; just the nature of the position. I only asked because it was very unusual for guys to have hip injuries back in my stone age days and it seems to be more common in the past 10 years or so and because other than the NHL on TV and this place, I'm not up on any trends or patterns at the local pond. Itech's advice is key no matter your style of play.

rfalls, I'm 47 so I'm pretty much sore all the time. :)

i've noticed if we have an action packed game where i'm constantly up and down, and making alot of bfly style saves my hips bother me the next day. I stretch everyday even if there is nothing hockey related other wise i'll pay for it the next time I suit up. Always stretch regardless of your style of play. I'm constantly hurting my hip flexors no matter what I do so im trying to back off on the split type saves and see if that helps. Cause I was pretty sore this morning
