    Default New to Inline

Hey, I don't know if many inline goalies come on this site or not, but I am adding to my hockey activity (2 ice men's leagues right now), and I'll be playing roller goalie on Sundays here soon. I had equipment questions though. I have inline skates that are meant for skating out. Will these work? Also, am I able to use the same protective equipment that I use for ice? Lastly, will my ice pads be alright to use on the roller rink surface? That's probably my biggest concern. I'd rather not ruin my DX2's.

Also, as for technique. I'm a Butterfly goalie. 99% of my saves are in butterfly. I've heard that you can't Bfly slide on inline. Is this true?

Remember, I've NEVER played inline goalie before, so compare my knowledge base to that of an infant. Any help, tips, techniques, recommendations will be greatly appreciated!

    Thanks.

ok the inline skates you have you can use even though they are player but you will want to get smaller wheels so your movement is quicker...go 59-62mm if ya can. If you are going to be doing this alot then i would suggest getting a goalie inline skate, they have 5 small wheels on the chassis with a goalie boot and believe me much better as player boots will not give you the ankle freedom you wish to have as a goalie.

You can use all your ice gear to play inline, most inline goalies are setup with Ice goalie gear becasue the inline pucks are close to ice puck weight and can be shot very hard. So you will want your C/A. jock, mask, pads ect...

The pads should be fine but will take alot more wear and tear and some inline goalies use pad covers on their pads.

As far a butterfly sliding on a inline rink (sport court) no you cannot slide.....at all. The second you hit the surface with your pads you will stick. To over come this you can use pad covers they will give abit of movement but not much or you can make some slide plates, plastic slide boards that you fit to your calf and knee wings of the pad so you can get more movement when down in the butterfly position. Look at the Itech 7.8 pad review in the review section of the forums and then scroll to the bottom of the review to see what the slide plates are like that i made for my pads when i played inline.
You will have to shuffle alot instead of sliding.

    Good luck!!

Yea, Ive seen many goalies use regular skates, I havent done it in a while, but you should be fine.

Your gear will be fine. I only play roller, and the worst thats happened to my pads is the toe strapped ripped. If youre playing on a sport court then your pads wont get ruined. I would use all your ice gear. Like the other person said, the roller pucks are still hard and heavy.

As for the last part, you cant slide across on sport court. To make up for it, I just lunge my legs across the crease and hope to get lucky.

It's going to be a tough adjustment for sure! Hopefully I don't stink too bad. I can't wait, I have always enjoyed trying something new.

Player skates are fine. I know most inline goalies prefer them... O.o

Butterfly style will work, the slide will not. You have to be more careful of your knees in inline. Make sure you lift your pad about an inch or two if you are going to move across the crease. Practice this before you play so you don't hurt yourself in a game. It is simple and will allow you to use your butterfly form for inline. If you master that, it shouldn't be a problem. T-push, step, or angle your feet for crease movement, shuffling would be a bad idea... :(

Are you playing on sport court? Polished concrete? Wood flooring? Tile? Cement/Spray on concrete finish?

If you are on the first three you should be fine. I've played on all five. They all exist, and in my humble opinion, anything other than sport court isn't very awesome unfortunately... I use my pads for years on sport court with no sign of wear from the court (Custom Vaughn V4's, so I use nice pads on sport court). One time on tile and I have scratches on the toes. I also have weave though which holds up a little better I've found.

Welcome to the world of inline, hope you enjoy it! Great summer training and so much fun! :) Good luck!

This thread is really old. But, nonetheless, I disagree with the above. I'd never recommend playing goalie with player skates, and most of the "better" goalies I know always played in goalie skates. All of them. Usually the only ones who played in player skates were either players filling in for goalie or the really crappy goalies who've played for less than a year and haven't gotten hit in the foot yet.
