    Default Sandmann's Season

So Game 2 last night did not go exactly as I had hoped. After finally coming up with a name for the team (We are now know as the SouthWest Spartans ) and with myself finally getting some goalie skates ( 2nd Hand Bauer Reactor100 ) I thought we would be as good as last week..... Boy was I wrong. Trying to get used to these skates was a little difficult but definatly improved my movement but the pads let me down again.

    1st Half .

Puck drops and almost instantly I challenging a shooter which went glove side so easy stop for me, but that was just the start. For the next 15 minutes it was like a one sided fight with myself being screened , 2 on 1 breakaways and the entire team crashing the net . Im so lucky my angles are up to scratch and I have good reflex's or it would of been worse then it was
Stats : 27 shots and 6 Goals including one that hit the blocker as I butterflied, continued up hit the top crossbar , bounced back hit the skate then went in.... Weirdest goal ever...

    2nd Half.

After having a quiet talk to the team about what they were doing wrong defensivly we seemed to pick up the read of the game better . I still faced a ton of shots but now they were coming from longer away and were easier to read and stop. I still got beaten on 2 wraparounds. ( My stick on ground work really needs improving as I have a nasty habit of lifting it )
    Stats : 24 Shots and 3 Goals.

    Final Score

    Sharks 9 vs Spartans 5

Hoping that next week I might actually have some proper Pads as these 32 inch Bauer reactors are killing me ( and my knees which managed to stop 4 shots themselves so hurts to walk today ) Have bought a set of 34+1 Brians from ebay so Im praying they arrive in time.

    Till next game

Your d-men need to figure out which team they're on. 51 shots on net? Other than that, seemed to be a great game for you.

So due to a major issue from the league we managed to not have a game this week.. Yay 420km round trip for nothing .... so nothing to report. Did do some scrimmage/practise last night at our home rink which I videod to see where I am strong and where I am weak. Will be reviewing that tonight after work. Might put some footage up for everyone to comment on if I can find my editing software. :)

    Till next time

You'd think they'd inform you before you made the trip!

There was a communcations breakdown due to someone getting the wrong contact number. I dont mind the drive as we do it weekly so I am used to it. After watching some video footage I have noticed major issues with my performance. I have a habit of not dropping into B-Fly ( Im new to the game so still learning how to properly atm I'm just flopping around and reacting.) Lifting my stick off the rink/Ice and keeping my catcher in a fingers down position. Apart from that my angles are ok except I sometimes come out the crease too far ( We dont have a circle marked crease more of a square ) and I sometimes get caught not covering my post well enough on shots, Wraparounds are good as so far havent been beaten there yet but longer range shots are still an issue as Im reacting to the shot and not picking up the puck quick enough.

Also have my very first game on Ice tomorrow night ( NOT wearing my gear thankfully but some brand new RBK and Eddy GTII Mask ) so that should be an experiance.

I have trouble with keeping my stick down too. I find I do much better with it when I consciously lead every movement with my stick. It also sets up my angles better that way. I'm sure it will become muscle memory after a while. Maybe give that a try.

So..... very first time on ice last night. WOW was that fun or what? Headed up to Perth to go fill in for a friend and to get some tips so once again pack the car and head off for another 420km round trip. Arrive at the rink to see my "buddy" smiling like a cheshire cat but didn't think anything of it as I put it down to him thinking it was going to be funny watching me move like a fish out of water. Head inside and go straight to the locker room to gear up. After putting on the gear and readjusting everything for me rather then said "buddy" it was finally time to hit the ice so off I go. Get out there, head to the nets, turn around....and see the Perth Thunder AIHL team coming out of the other locker rooom an onto the ice .... great now I know what all the smiling was about.. yeah thanks "mate" (side note. The Perth Thunder are a new expansion team in the AIHL. The AIHL is considered equivalent to Canadian Tier II Junior A Hockey.) So this was going to be a real baptism of fire for me. All I can say is dahm I am so freaking glad Im wearing someone elses gear and not mine as yikes that would be stupid and very painfull. After taking some of the quickest shots I have ever seen in my entire life it was time for a break ... OMG yes please.. skated over to my now very ex friend , call him a few choice words ( none of which can ever be repeated in a public forum ) grab a drink and head back to the nets. Coach comes over to me and gives me some tips and pointers tells me I'm doing great an walks off . Other goalie comes over tells me his sorry for the setup and also gives me some advice. But as they say there is no rest for the wicked so back to practice we go again. Finally after 2 hours time is called and we all head off to the locker rooms to get changed. Sitting in my corner getting all the gear off when the coach walks over an tells me that he could not believe it was my first time on Ice, He then goes on to tell me my angles are great , my post are great an my blocker side is almost perfect but my stick and my glove could use some work as could my b-fly slide an recovery ( this was expected as well ummm I'm a newbie an have only ever played roller and only for like 3 months ) He then extends an offer for me to train with the development squad..... Hang on what ????? are you serious??.. Apparently they were . So it looks like its time for me to upgrade all my gear as my current stuff wont cut it at this level.

(For the record. Ice Hockey isnt big at all in W.A or Australia in general at all. Goaltenders are extremly rare. there is currently 4 Goal tenders playing for 9 teams in each division so I'm guessing being asked to train with the development squad ain't huge news but for me it is certainly a confience boost. )

Wow, Sandman. Congrats. That sounds like an amazing first experience. I'm a little envious. Good luck, and keep us posted!

Once again no game this week due to it being our bye week so only practice and scrimmage :( . Have a general question tho. As most people would be aware ( well those who have seen what gear I wear anyway ) I am currently using a set of 32 inch Bauer Pads that have probably seen years then most and was wondering if there was a way of strapping a pad correctly ( I'm very new and have noone else to ask really ). Skate strap is being done semi loose ( can get a finger or two between the skate and strap ) and goes through the back hole. Calf strap is loose enough to get a couple of fingers in , higher strap is loose enough that the pad rotates and the top two straps cross and are as loose as possible. The problem I'm having is that I am getting no rotation at all when I attempt to b-fly or I am getting too much so when I stand back up its half way around my thigh. Does having the leg channel/ knee pads improve this ( I hope so as no knee pads = me not wanting to drop as my kness are smashing on the rink) Also anyone give me help as to how to strap these old pads up for the right way .

Ideally, we need to see pics.
That being said, if your pads are the older style, they may not be butterfly pads. If your knees are banging on the surface, I'm inclined to think you have no knee stacks...
Are you using toe ties? If not, you should. They keep the pads from over-rotating. There is a post in this forum on using toe ties with inline skates. Check it out.
Also, if you are using "pre b-fly" pads, the leg channel is probably very deep, and this minimizes rotation as well. That style pad was actually not designed to rotate, and was expected to be worn rather snug.

In conclusion, WE NEED PICS to help you the most. I can type till I'm blue in the fingers, but it doesn't really help if I'm shooting in the dark.
