Default How do goalies deal with the summer heat?

I enjoy playing year-round but the summer's are tough. I was seeing stars midway through today's game. I remember something about goalies on the old Pro Beach Hockey sewing pockets for cooler packs into their chest protectors. Has anyone had experience with this or have any other ideas to battle the heat? It's bad enough battling the shooters...thanks!

I think the goalies in Pro Beach were on their feet, right? Sewing cold packs in a chest protector would be a terrible idea for roller goalies.. that water's going to drip into your crease, making it a mess to try to stand up on.

I wore full pro ice hockey stuff when I played. All I did to keep the heat down was switch to tech pants instead of sweat pants, make sure to wear a moisture-wicking shirt, and stay hydrated during the game. I'd usually bring a bottle to my net despite most refs/rinks saying "no." I'd just say I had medicine in it or something and they'd let it go, haha.

I was wondering what you meant with regards to beating the summer heat, as I havent noticed a huge difference in the rink that I would need an ice pack..... well this year especially as summer was late in coming.

Now i get that you mean out door hockey....

Lots of water. Our only indoor non-ice rink has no such rules involving water bottles on the playing surface for goalies, thank god! Although, since syn mentioned it, I recall my first couple of games there may have been such a rule, but it didn't last long. I would think water in the crease would affect the goalie more than the players anyways, so it's in my best interests to drink my water over top of the net, so the water stays in the goal.

Other than that, there's not much you can do to beat the heat. And it's worse in dry floor arenas :( I've noticed some roller goalies play with nothing under their equipment. I find that gross, so I don't do it, but it may help

Thanks for the great feedback. Looks like even though I posted in the Roller Goalie forum it's not real clear unless you are on the website.

They've always allowed water bottles in my league on the net. I tried Under Armour Heat Gear and I find it works better than going commando.

The PBH goalies were on wheels and I remember one saying they did sew freezer packs into their chest protector...guess I'll keep researching. I'll post if I come across anything.

I used a collar style throat protector once that I drenched in ice cold water before the game. That was a great idea for about 10 minutes until the water turned as hot as I was. I find wearing heat guard under armor type stuff works best...I usually wear long sleeves but it's gotten so hot some games that I've reverted to short sleeves.

If I get a chance, I run back to the bench and squirt my neck with some cold water. That cools me down enough to keep me comfortable. I wouldn't do this in the crease, since it gets messy.

While I only play floor hockey at the current time, I still have to deal with the heat of the building I am in. It is basically a big metal warehouse building with minimal circulation, and all artificial light. It gets HOT when its hot out, and cold when its cold out. To deal with the heat, I wear just an undershirt under my chest protector, and when I get a chance, I spray the back of my neck with water. If we have a break in play, I will rip off the helmet and spray it down inside too and then put it back on, keeping my head cool.

I try to make sure I spray the water when I am standing out around the back or to the sides of the net, so that way I dont slip when trying to stand up. When I played dek hockey outdoors in winter, I loved spraying down the crease so that I could slide back and forth ;-)

I'd say under armor heat gear. Thats gotta be the best way... Aside from staying hydrated as well.

Down here in Texas in the spring/summer/fall our ice rinks are HOT! What i usually do is bring two water bottles with me to the net. One to drink and one to spray down my back. Another thing i do is if there is a stoppage of play, i try to skate around a bit and get some air flowing.
