if I get beat in this position it is because of a cross-crease pass not on the initial shot

You should be able to push off the post with your load leg and get a strong cross crease slide. You could also try using your stick to prevent a cross crease pass or get on your defense to cover your backside. Otherwise, you may be using the VH in the wrong situations. Ideally it should ONLY be used for tight angle shots near the side of the goal and wraparounds.

when u say side are u talking about dead angle shots or any side, i use this all the time if the shooter is coming down the wing on his off side (stick near boards rather then on the inside of the ice) and he shots top shelf short side, easy, quick and covers if i happen to not catch it or if i read the release wrong and it goes five hole. recovery is quick and easy

The area from the post to the bottom of the circle to the goal line would be a tight angle. You'd only want to use a VH if the shooter is within 3-5 feet of you, so basically if you can touch the shooter with your stick, then you can use the VH, otherwise you are giving the shooter too much net to work with.

If you have good strong lateral pushes though, the loading is a good position I find to get cross crease to make a cross-crease save.

The problem I have with my loading is I don't get my legs tight enough together and I actually get beat five-hole a couple of times. I think I was relying too much on the load, not thinking about holes and not reading the shot, just letting it hit me. Though if your load is technically strong and the puck is in a quiet area, not a lot of an angle to shoot, then you can take your eyes off the puck to look for attacking players, trying to read the play.
