I'm starting to think this may be related to how I was first taught to slide. The process taught to me was:
1) Rotate head/shoulders, then push leg to perpendicular of slide direction
2) Slightly lift and bring in sliding leg, rotate foot to keep parallel with ice
3) Load push leg
4) Drop sliding leg at knee
5) Push and land on sliding leg
6) Bring push leg in to close 5-hole.
My toe ties are pretty loose (about 2"), and I don't feel any pulling or strain from them. Any longer and I fear I will end up stepping on them.
I will try and do the exaggerated push. I don't have a lot of warm up time, we get maybe 3 minutes before puck drop, so I did have to rush it a bit. During a game, I can butterfly slide pretty well - I don't have a chance to think, just do. The biggest issue I have is the short push once I'm down already, but a couple other tips mentioned should help with that.
Thanks for the input guys! Keep it coming!

ALL the tips mentioned should help me. Thanks for asking the question HSD.
will - that is totally what I need to practice. I think I will take bacon's idea, put on my player shin pads and practice on the basement floor. Should provide a smooth enough surface to slide, yet not so slippery that I blast across the room. :) Going from standing into a push gives a lot more momentum. I need to work on the pushes from being down.
Gianni - no problem. If we never ask for help, we'll never get any! :)
